Helping YOU help the PLANET and be PROFITABLE
Framing Problems
Defining the problem is the first step towards defining relevant solutions. David starts by understanding your organization's vision, culture and challenges to implement sustainable solutions. Learning forward from failures is key to sustainability and creating a learning culture to evolve to our customers, culture and climate.
Tactical Strategy
Working across a range of organizations as a scientist, program manager, leader and administrator - strategies often fail at the first point of contact with reality. Tactical strategies that consider existing resources, incentives and operating environment are important and placing strong emphasis on implementation and monitoring are key to success.
Implementation
Most consulting firms provide clients with a professional paper and deck of slides and don't roll up their sleeves to do the hard part - implementation. Having experience in implementing with partners large, complex development programs, I have learned several tools, tactics and incentives to empower people to make significant contributions to a better business and healthier people and planet.
TOP STORIES
Impact
Working together with colleagues and partners at the Bill & Melinda Gates foundation and CIMMYT and ICRISAT, we reached over 20 million farm families with resilient and nutritious crop varieties and cropping systems. This resulted in increased farmer income, improve household nutrition and efficient use of natural resources, including crop biodiversity. To scale human-centered solutions, we worked with a range of public and private sector partners to start Digital Agriculture in 2011 and embraced the role of entrepreneurs to accelerate the pace of using digital solutions for farmers and our food system. Against the backdrop of rapid climate change, we need to apply a Science of Discovery to Science of Delivery mindset to compress the timeframe to scaling pragmatic solutions for farmers and society to adapt to and mitigate climate change while preserving our natural resources for future generations.
A Systems Approach to India's Food System
Working with scientists and policy makers across state and federal agencies, we developed 5 large initiatives that the Government of India implemented over 18 months that improved markets for farmers, soil health and water management, increased production and consumption of legumes (pulses) for better nutrition, and applied digital tools to empower farmers access knowledge and better markets. Learn about the story behind these successful programs.
Better Data for Better Decisions
For farmers in emerging markets in Asia, Africa and Latin America, they don't have access to accurate weather data to inform farm operations. aWhere has addressed this constraint by providing complete weather data every 9 km across the planet where farmers grow crops. Learn how this was done and why it is a game changer for achieving the Sustainable Development Goals.
Power of Participatory Approaches to Deliver Solutions
During my career at the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, I was successful in scaling solutions in large part by using participatory approaches to test technologies early to adjust products, services and their delivery. This is expecially true for sustainability initiatives that require staff and community buy-in to achieve lasting impact. Learn how we can apply this to your organization.
